Full-Stack, Front-End, and Back-End Developers: Who is What?

The content we experience on the internet is the production of thousands of developers. In this post, we will talk about front-end, back-end, and full-stack developers and what they exactly do.

What Do Developers With Different Specialties Do?

What Do Front-End Developers Do?

All of the visible features you see in a website or an app are a front-end developer’s work. They are the ones who implement the designs and use different coding techniques such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

In every site or application, you are looking at a front-end developer’s job. A site or app layout, navigation, including this blog page you are reading from, are all works done by the front-end developers.

Read our interview with Hamed, a top front-end developer, and his experiences and challenges in app development.

Front-end developers need to set up a web page’s surface and sync the code with the UI design to connect to a designer’s work.

A front-end developer’s other job is to fix errors and make sure there are no bugs in the service (web or mobile).

In short, they need to make sure everything works and looks as it should across different browsers and platforms.

So, let’s go through some of the primary skills a front-end developer offers to your IT or software development project:

  1. Problem-solving skills:

The problem-solving skill makes the heart and soul of a great front-end developer.

And they need it everywhere!

They need to figure out how to implement the design perfectly, fix the errors and bugs that will come up, and make the front code align and work with the implemented back-end code.

2. Testing and Debugging

A front-end developer needs to be familiar with different testing methods. These testing methods are different in every programming language—for example, UI testing or writing HTML codes to locate a particular action on a page.

Debugging is also very important.

A front-end developer investigates problems after launching a website or an app and fixes these problems.

3. Cross-Browser Development

There are different browsers for every device and platform.

A front-end developer needs to make sure your website looks flawless on other browsers as well.

What Do Back-End Developers Do?

So the front-end developers are responsible for how to showcase the designer’s designs. But they also need to work on the frame developed by the back-end developers.

Back-end developers deal with the part of the service that users are not interacting with but build the basic and foundation of a web page or mobile app.

Think of it this way: if you have a car, the back-end developer is the one responsible for the under the hood parts. The front-end developer is responsible for displaying and connecting what the designers had designed with what is under the hood and making sure they work correctly!

A back-end developer is involved in web or mobile app infrastructures such as databases, server scripts, and APIs.

Let’s define them one by one:

  1. Database: Data storage applications that provide websites with active content updates. For example, if you want to check your account balance on a mobile bank application, the application must access the database to review your account.
  2. Server scripts: Scripts are sets of written code directions that tell computer programs to “do something”. The back-end or “server-side” scripts allow a website’s servers to answer actions and requests from the front-end.
  3. APIs: APIs (which stands for Application Programming Interface) are sets of routines, obligations, and mechanisms that allow applications to interact with each other. For example, the share button on a Youtube video, which displays other platforms such as Facebook or Twitter, is an API that allows cross-platform sharing.

Back-end developers build and maintain the server-side applications and tools and add a lot of function and efficiency to what users see on their different screens.

What Do Full-Stack Developers Do?

A full-stack developer is a person who can handle both front-end and back-end development.

For your app or website development, a full-stack developer can manage the design, database, users, and system engineering.

They are trendy in today’s app development and software industry because of their extensive development knowledge.

According to the client’s demand, they can work on a native application stack, a mobile stack, or a web stack.

Full-stack developers know about both the user-side and the server-side of development.

A good option that you can consider is to have a full-stack developer on your team to help both the front-end and back-end developers.

The demand for full-stack developers is relatively high because they can handle multiple responsibilities and enhance their team’s productivity.

A full-stack developer can also write APIs, program databases, and create website or app designs.

To sum things up:  What are the differences between front-end, back-end, and full-stack developers?
DeveloperSpecialties
Front-end– Knows the user side.
– Professional in different development languages.
– Implementing the design with the back-end service.
Back-end– Specialists in serve-side of development.
– Familiar with the database, server management, and APIs.
Full-stack– Have both front-end and back-end skills
– Have knowledge about both the user-side and server-side of development.

Why Hire a Full-Stack Developer?

  1. Full-stack developers create fast prototype designs for the product. They follow a holistic approach to developing solutions.
  2. In most cases, a full-stack developer is the head of a team. They help their fellow team members in achieving their duties properly. That’s because, as we discussed beforehand, they are familiar with the other two viewpoints of development.
  3. Full-stack developers can access any characteristic of a web application without encountering any issues. They can assist their teammates in resolving issues associated with their departments. For example, a full-stack developer can resolve design problems and support a front-end developer.
